Boat Shoes or commonly known as topsiders or deck shoes are leather with non marking soles designed to be used on a boat. These shoes are commonly used by a sailor. Its sipping pattern is cut into the soles to provide grip on a wet deck for the user’s safety; its leather construction, along with application oil, is designed to repel water.
These boat shoes were invented by Paul Sperry in 1935 when he noticed his dog’s ability to run on a slippery ice without slipping. So, using his knife he cut sipping into his shoes’ soles to create friction against the slippery deck or floor. And a company called Sperry Top-Sider. Boat shoes are traditionally worn without socks.
